Most people don't think much about what goes into a driveway until they've got standing water, washouts, or a surface that's falling apart after a couple of seasons. The truth is, a driveway is only as good as the prep work underneath it - and that starts way before any gravel or asphalt ever touches the ground.

On this job, we were working with a local property that needed a new driveway built from scratch. That means excavating the area, getting the grade right, and making sure water has somewhere to go. Drainage is one of those things that's easy to skip if you're cutting corners, but it's also the first thing that fails when it rains hard. We don't skip it.

Those concrete culvert pipes in the foreground aren't just sitting there for show. They're part of a properly engineered drainage solution designed to move water away from the driveway and keep it from undermining the base over time. Get the drainage wrong and it doesn't matter how well everything else is built - you'll be dealing with erosion and soft spots before long.

We ran both the Bobcat excavator and the CAT track loader on this one to get the grading dialed in and handle the pipe work efficiently. Having the right equipment on site makes a real difference in how clean and accurate the finished grade comes out. Proper site preparation like this is what separates a driveway that holds up for years from one that becomes a problem every time it rains.

Every property is different - the slope, the soil, the drainage patterns. That's why we look at each job on its own terms and build a plan that actually fits the site. Do it right the first time and you don't have to come back and fix it.
